What to look for
in cosmetic surgeons
| What to look for: |
- Any medical doctor may offer to perform cosmetic surgery, but a prospective patient should look for plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery training and experience when choosing a surgeon. Board certification in a specialty that teaches plastic and/or cosmetic surgery is desirable: plastic surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), ophthalmology, dermatology or oral maxillofacial surgery. In addition, current membership in specialized professional societies is desirable. Such societies include the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; American Academy of Plastic Surgeons; American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons; American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons; American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
- A prospective patient should also meet, feel comfortable with and trust the surgeon. Ask to see "before and after" photos of actual patients. Many surgeons will give you the names of their patients to contact as references.
